Dev diary: road to Beta 1

🛠️ Dev Diary 2/05: Inside the Forge with Ignace

🔧 What did we work on this week?

First of all I’m excited to say that we got our networking functionality to work! Multiple people can now be on one map at the same time, and this counts for both the GM and players. Besides this I’ve also been working on the options to load in different TTRPG systems.

🎉 One satisfying win this week

We had to upturn the way our save-load system worked in our alpha version. The previous system made huge file sizes out of all of your maps which caused the saving process to take forever. But after I did a deep dive I’ve now managed to make the file sizes way smaller, speeding up the saving process. Where a map (with markers and walls) was usually around hundreds of megabytes, I got it sized down to 24.

🌀 Here’s a peek at something still cooking

I’m pretty close to finishing the functionality of our system uploading capabilities. This means that you would be able to load any TTRPG system into Realm Architect as long as you had a data list of the contents. Currently D&D and Pathfinder were already successful thanks to community-made data lists.

🐛 Something tricky you’re wrangling

Fog of war was a difficult one to get right. Getting over the glitches and switching between different iterations before getting to the one we currently settled on. This version is heavier on the system but works and looks way smoother.

👀 One thing you’re excited to share soon

In combination with the new UI designs I’m working on making a tree branch functionality to link different maps together.

🎶 What music kept you going this week?

Currently I’ve been needing the peace of some ancient Egyptian ambient music.
